Hey Fangirls!  There’s a really awesome artist I want to talk about today, and his name is Phillip Light

I first heard of Phillip when I was introduced to the idea of Disneybounding.  He and Leslie Kay have been working together for over a year.  She designs adorable Disney themed outfits, and he brings them to life!

As fantastic as his Disneybound pieces are, his work for school and practice is simply phenomenal.  His tumblr and blogspot show an amazing range; from cartoony to rendered with shadows to high fashion-esque pieces.  That range alone drew me in.  But to top that, he even shows how he works.  He shows his concept sketches and how he works up to a finished piece.  I think that’s very helpful.  Seeing how someone else works always makes it easier for me to see the best way for me to work.

It’s amazing to just look through his tumblr and see the work he has up.  I was astounded when I saw this 3-D helmet he made from clay and found items.

philliplight3dI think it’s really cool to scroll through his stuff, because you get a glimpse of what he does in school, what he has done with Disney Bound, and the little challenges he gives himself daily.

This piece is from a character design challenge he has given himself - start off each day by taking the next letter in the alphabet and creating a male and female character whose name starts with that letter. Here's A.

The dedication he puts into keeping himself good is admirable.  It shows that he wants to do what he does, and it shows that he is improving.

It’s just inspiring.  But it isn’t all business, there are some fun pieces too, like the Sloth Princesses series.

Hilarious, right?

I also really like this one.  It’s high fashion with a twist of hilarity.

philliplight_octohairIt’s just so fun!

When we asked him what advice he would give aspiring artists, he said,

All I would say is to keep drawing and practicing and trying new things. I still need to tell myself to do this. You will only grow as an artist if you continue to push yourself technically and creatively. Also, I know it sounds really cliche, but follow your dreams! Often times I feel people are put down upon if they have an interest in art because it isn’t the most ideal career according to society, but if it makes you happy then continue to do it and show them wrong!

I think it’s grand that he’s encouraging people to do what they love.  “ if it makes you happy then continue to do it and show them wrong! ”

I think that is something you would hear from a lot of artists.  If you love it, do it!  That’s one of my favorite things about the art community.  But that’s all I’m going to say about Mr. Light, but here are some links for you to see his stuff for yourself!  Have fun, Fangirls!
